One of the coolest things about playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is that you have no idea what you might find. The game is full of little secrets and hidden mechanics that make playing the game after beating it even more fun.

A hidden feature you may not know about is that you can farm crops in Hateno Village. In order to do this, you must complete 2 very easy Side Quests. Once those are complete, you can grow certain fruits and vegetables in the garden. Here is a guide to unlocking this.

How To Unlock The Garden In Hateno Village

If you want to unlock the garden in Hateno Village, first you must head to Hateno School. There, you will have to complete 2 different quests.

You'll need to travel to and from the school several times. If you have a Travel Medallion, you may want to place one in front of the school until you're finished with this quest.

Teach Me A Lesson I Walkthrough

There, you will meet Symin. He will ask you to visit during his class hours, which are around 9:00 until 1:00 or so. The class he is teaching is a history class discussing Hylian history. Once you visit during class, the students will tell Symin that they don't believe The Great Calamity happened. You will be tasked with heading to Kakariko Village and taking a picture of the wall scroll depicting the event.

Once in Kakariko Village, head inside the Elder's Hall (the largest building) and find the picture of The Great Calamity. Pull out your camera and take a picture. Once you return to Symin, the kids will believe him.

If you show up after school is over, just wait at a fire until morning.

After teaching the kids that The Great Calamity was real, you'll need to help Symin again. Instead of doing a history lesson, he needs help with an economics lesson this time. Link's presence in the classroom is the perfect opportunity to truly teach the kids.

The kids are learning that cooking with Monster Extract can make some interesting meals. Unfortunately, the kids are skeptical again. It is Link's job to prove to the kids that there are tasty meals made with this ingredient.

Symin will ask you to create Monster Curry. You'll need Hylian Rice, which can be bought at Hateno Village General Store, Goron Spice, which can be bought at the Goron City General Store, and Monster Extract from Tarrey Town.

Mixing all these ingredients together will create Monster Curry. Upon showing the kids, they taste the food and start believing that Symin was correct.

He will then send you to Uma to check out the garden.

How To Use The Garden

You can find Uma to the south of Hateno School. There, she will tell you that she has been waiting on you. She will tell Link that she can plant the following items (so long as you have one in your inventory already).

  • Pumpkins
  • Carrots (Swift and Endura)
  • Tomatoes
  • Wildberries
  • Wheat
  • Rice
  • Melons

After telling her what you'd like to plant, she will tell Link that he cannot skip time to make his plants grow faster. You cannot wait at fires or sleep at inns to pass the time. These crops will take 2 in-game days.

Return to the garden after the required time to complete the Uma's Garden quest. You can then harvest the plants and continue planting more.
