First introduced in the gameplay trailer for Tears of the Kingdom, Puffshrooms are among the most precious tools in an adventurer’s arsenal, especially for combat. Once hit, these pink mushrooms explode into white smoke that persists in an area, blinding enemies and making them susceptible to sneak attacks.

Finding Puffshrooms is a matter of venturing down into the Depths and locating a specific type of tree. The Depths is a region rich in resources, but knowing where to look to specifically find Puffshrooms will make your farming journey much easier.

Where To Find Puffshrooms

In the Depths, Puffshrooms spawn at the base of a very specific type of tree. There are three types of trees in the Depths, Pink Mushroom Trees, Yellow Mushroom Trees, and Fern Trees. You can identify these trees by their in-game appearance as well as how they appear on the map. All three are identified in the picture below.

Puffshrooms grow at the base of Pink Mushroom Trees, Bomb Flowers under the Yellow Mushroom Trees, and Muddle Buds under the Fern Trees. Now, there are no separate copses of pink trees as all three types grow next to each other, so the way to farm tons of Puffshrooms is to find the locations with the highest density of trees in one area. Run through that area on foot and circle each Pink Mushroom Tree you see to pick up Puffshrooms.

Trees are not guaranteed to spawn Puffshrooms or other materials besides them. So don’t worry if you’re not finding new spawns under every tree.

Puffshrooms are also sold by the Bargainer Statue in Lookout Landing for 16 Poes.

Best Locations To Farm Puffshrooms

The Depths are chock-full of trees of all types, and you can't go two steps without running into a tree. However, some locations have a higher concentration of trees than others.

North Great Abandoned Central Mine (Depths)

Directly south of Lookout Landing, you’ll find the Hyrule Field Chasm. This will be the first chasm that you will enter in the game if you follow the main quest. Head down the chasm to light up the Nisoij Lightroot. Head west to find the Iayusus Lightroot and then directly south to find the Nihcayam Lightroot. This will light up a large portion of the northern Great Abandoned Central Mine area.

Lighting up these Lighroots is part of completing the Camera Work in the Depths questline, so if you’ve completed that, you will most likely have already unlocked this region.

Once all three Lighroots are activated, open the map and observe the triangular area highlighted in the map.

This is a prime spot for Puffshroom farming. Perhaps because this will be players’ first introduction to the Depths and the materials they can find within, this area is jam-packed with tons of materials to find and Puffshroom trees to farm.

To farm, just run around the trees collecting any Puffshrooms you see. The tree trunks are large, so often, materials are hidden from view if looked at from only one angle. Bring a Speed Up Elixir or food to make the process easier.

Gerudo Canyon Mine (Depths)

Start from Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower. Orient yourself eastward, and you’ll see two chasms, one large and one small. Head towards the smaller one. This chasm is directly behind the cliff wall with the A Show of Fealty Geoglyph.

Activate the Rotsumamu Shrine just before you enter the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm and dive inside. Once you reach the depths, you’ll find the Umamustor Ligthroot directly underneath the shrine. Activate it to light up the area.

Ignore the Yiga Clan Hideout for now and look westward just past the Zonai device cache near the Lightroot. You’ll see a sloping underground valley with tons of trees of all kinds, Puffshroom trees among them. This is the Gerudo Canyon Mine area, and it is a ‘goldmine’ for farming everything: from Puffshrooms to muddle buds to bomb flowers. Every tree in the valley has a chance to spawn materials, making an occasional trip here extremely profitable.

When Do Puffshroom Respawn

Once you’ve picked an area clean of Puffshrooms and other materials, leave. As long as you’re not in the vicinity of that location, there is a small chance for materials to respawn. Your best bet is to farm an area, leave, and then come back when you’re running low on resources again.

The Gerudo Canyon Mine area is amazing exactly because of this reason. It is so far out of the way that you’re unlikely to visit it except to farm, giving new Puffshrooms plenty of time to spawn again.

How To Use Puffshroom

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Puffshroom fused to an arrow

Puffshrooms are some of the most useful materials in Tears of the Kingdom. On activation, they function like a smoke bomb that blinds enemies, making them vulnerable to sneak attacks. The area of effect of the white smoke released by these shrooms is surprisingly large, and you can blind whole groups of enemies in one go with just one Puffshroom.

There are four ways to use Puffshrooms.

  • Throwing: The simplest way is the easiest. Simply throw a Puffshroom at a spot, and it will explode into white smoke as soon as it impacts a solid surface.
  • Weapon Fusion: You can fuse a melee weapon with a Puffshroom and activate it by hitting an enemy. Interestingly, if you use a Forest Dweller weapon, the Puffshroom doesn’t get destroyed after one activation, meaning you can use it again and again until the weapon breaks.
  • Arrow Fusion: To hit a faraway enemy, you can fuse a Puffhshroom to an arrow and throw it. This can also be used to hit groups of unaware monsters.
  • Shield Fusion: When fused to a shield, the Puffshroom will only activate when an enemy hits your shield.
