The complete rehaul of the map in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a big part of what separates this sequel from Breath of the Wild. Exploring the Depths and the Sky Islands is part of the core gameplay loop, but it can be surprisingly challenging at times.

The Apapes Lightroot is located in a locked-off region of the Depths, not accessible by any means from the underground. To find it, you'll have to first find a tucked-away cave entrance on the Surface that's really easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

If you've been exploring the Depths underneath the Central Hyrule region, and you've activated every Lightroot in the area, you might have noticed a glaring empty hole in your map. Surrounding on all sides by walls, you cannot enter this mysterious region of darkness from the Depths, but there is a way to reach it from the Surface and activate the Apapes Lightroot there to light up the region.

The Depths mirror the Surface in interesting ways, and if you open up the surface map of this region, you'll notice this area is actually an island surrounded on all sides by water. In the Depths, water equates to walls, and if an area is surrounded on all sides by water on the Surface, it means it's closed off in the Depths too.

  1. Head up to the Surface to the Sepapa Shrine. The Apapes Lightroot is located right under the Sepapa Shrine at the coordinates 0221, 1084, -0474. If you haven't activated this Shrine yet, you can teleport to the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and head northeast to find the island surrounded by water.

  2. Run toward the southwestern edge of the island and jump into the water at these coordinates: 0099, 0846, 0008. Now, look back toward the island, and you should see a small, hidden cave entrance you swim into.
  3. Swim inside, and you will find the Hyrule Castle Moat East Chasm. In this cave, there is a chasm entrance and little else. Jump down the chasm to find the Apapes Lightroot.

  4. You'll be treated to the sight of complete darkness, as is customary in the Depths, and if you're unlucky, a Blue White Frox. The Frox is circling the Lightroot, but you can safely glide past him if you orient yourself towards the Apapes Lightroot from high up.
  5. From the chasm entrance, turn north to see the dull, pulsating yellow light indicating an unlit Lightroot to the north.
  6. Avoid the Frox and follow the light to reach your objective and activate the Apapes Lightroot.
