The depths under Hyrule in Tears Of The Kingdom offer some of the hardest challenges for the entire game. It's dark, it's full of deadly gloom, and on top of that, there are mini-bosses littered throughout. One of these mini-bosses is a species named Frox.

As the name suggests, Frox is aesthetically what you get when you mix a frog with a Hinox. They only slightly share a weak point though, so even if you're a master at slaying Hinox, do not expect the same challenge with the Frox.

Updated By Wyatt Grondin on June 13th, 2023: Each type of Frox drops a variety of loot, so a section has been added to cover these drops. A few extra facts about the boss were added to make fighting them even easier.

How Many Types Of Frox Are There

Tears Of The Kingdom Blue-White Frox Bodyslamming

Frox is only found in the depths, which alone makes them a threat from the fact you'll barely be able to see in most areas and that you could walk into a patch of gloom easier than not. What makes this worse is that there are four types of Frox:

  • Little Frox
  • Frox
  • Obsidian Frox
  • Blue-White Frox

This is also a list of Frox in ascending order of weakest to hardest. They each pack a punch, but the health pool is higher between these versions. A Frox is weaker than an Obsidian Frox, which is weaker than a Blue-White Frox.

But, when it comes to strategy, the mini-boss versions of Frox will also have the same move pool and can be taken down with the same method. The odd one out is the Little Frox, which is just a basic enemy type. As such, how to defeat the Little Frox will be saved for the end as they are less dangerous, but there are ways to make encountering them even easier to deal with.

One extra fact that all Frox share is that unlike nearly every other enemy found in The Depths, Frox will not do Gloom damage to you. The only other Depths enemy this fact is shared with are Temple Bosses and Flux Constructs.

Frox, Obsidian Frox, And Blue-White Frox

Tears Of The Kingdom Frox Inhaling

Each mini-boss level of Frox can body slam and charge at you. These will hit for a lot of hearts and only hit harder the tougher the level of the Frox. Not only that, but tougher Frox can do more body slams in a row, so do not stop running until it is completely done. There's not much of anything else you can do when it comes to these attacks; you don't have room for a counter, unlike the Frox's signature move.

The Frox can inhale Link from a distance, and if you are far enough away, this makes the perfect opening. Like with the Hinox, you shoot the Frox in the eye to stun it.

Tears Of The Kingdom Stamina Attack Spin On Blue-White Frox Back

Unlike the Hinox, the Frox's skin is fully immune to all of your attacks; it can only take damage by Link attacking the Ore deposits on its back. These are Zonaite deposits and will drop Zonaite when you break them, and they will also be a bit tougher than regular deposits. Not unlike the Rock or Battle Talus, but there's more than one. Remember that hammer weapons spin when you make a stamina charge attack, so try and do this on the spot on Frox's back, where you can slam against multiple deposits.

Tears Of The Kingdom Aiming A Keese Eyeball Fused Arrow At Blue-White Frox While In Air

When the Frox regains itself, it will buck you, and this may send Link high into the air. You'll want this to happen, as this is a perfect vantage point to shoot another arrow into the Frox's eye. Effectively meaning it has no chance to harm you between your attacks on Ore.

Tears Of The Kingdom Obsidian Frox Exploding After Eating A Bombflower

You can shoot a Bombflower arrow into the Frox's mouth while it inhales, which will stun it. Also, if you've already learned how to summon the Avatar of Tulin, this Avatar is surprisingly great at aiming for the dead center of Frox's eye, meaning there will be times you don't have to do anything before the next stun.

Little Frox

Tears Of The Kingdom Little Frox Ambush

Little Frox is nothing more than annoying little pests who, while going down in one hit, always manage to ambush you are the worst time. Simply put, bring an Avatar and just let them kill the Little Frox while you try and move out of the way. If not, shield or use arrows; they don't do much damage but are very fast and won't give you much room.

Frox Loot

Loot from the mini-boss Frox are pretty uniform:

  • Large Crystallized Charge
  • Frox Fingernail
  • Frox Guts
  • Zonaite
  • Large Zonaite

Along with the above, each level of mini-boss Frox will drop fangs labeled of that type, so either Frox Fang, Obsidian Frox Fang, or Blue-White Frox Fang. These Fangs all have high Fuse power and only get stronger the higher the level of mini-boss Frox. This alone makes it worth knowing where the Frox can be found.

However, the Little Frox is more limited in its loot drops:

  • Zonaite
  • Giant Brightbloom Seed
  • Brightbloom Seed

While you won't get anything worth Fusing from killing Little Frox, you do at least get more Brightblooms to help you navigate The Depths. For the annoyance they'll give you, it'll be up to you if the trouble was worth it.
