You messed up. Whether you accidentally put some random rock on an amazing sword or realized that bombs on shields do not work the way you hoped they would, you've fused something to your weapon or shield, and now you want it off.

Luckily there is a way to unfuse items in The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, and it's not even that hard to do. However, you may not know that there's an alternate method that even lets you keep the attached materials. Here's everything you need to know about unfusing weapons and shields.

How To Unfuse From Your Inventory

Link unfuses items from his inventory.

The easiest and cheapest way to unfuse can be done from anywhere at any time. Simply open your inventory, navigate to the weapon or shield you want to unfuse, select the item, and select the "Destroy Fused Material" option. Don't you wish they would've explained this when you first got the ability?

Don't worry; this method won't harm your weapon in any way, but it will destroy whatever material you placed on top of it, so this way of unfusing items is best used when you accidentally fused something bad to a good weapon. This ease of access also lets you experiment with all sorts of different fusion options.

Keep in mind that this won't affect the durability of the base weapon for better or worse. You can't fuse another item to an already damaged and unfused weapon to extend its durability, and unfusing doesn't hurt the durability of the weapon either.

How To Unfuse Without Destroying The Material

Link talks to Pelison in Tarry Town.

The second method to unfuse weapons and shields is much more involved but with one big advantage: It doesn't destroy the fused material. To unfuse items this way, you'll first have to make your way to Tarry Town in Akkala, which is off to the east of Hyrule Castle. Once you've made it to town, look for Pelison, a small Goron in a yellow hard hat.

Pelison deposits the unfused items in the Collection Area in Tarry Town.

This young builder isn't so good at putting things together, but he's amazing at breaking them down. If you talk to him, he'll offer to unfuse the materials from an item in your inventory for the fair price of 20 rupees. Despite Pelison's reputation for breaking things, both the weapon and the fused material will be left unharmed in a collection area just beside him.

This means that this method of unfusing will even let you reuse rare materials that can't be carried in your inventory. It's a great way to salvage the Flame Emitter off of your Flame-Emitter Shield or keep passing around rare boss drops like the Flux Construct I Core.
